Upper Chesapeake Summer Center for the Arts Program Descriptions

Chorus - #UCSCA-1
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Students will explore individual, small group, and full ensemble literature through a comprehensive approach to musicianship. Analysis, research, and performance will provide the basis for a total understanding of the selected repertoire. The experiences will go much beyond their regular performance experiences and strive to develop independent musicality. Each performance medium and the research findings will be featured in a final presentation.

Creativity - #UCSCA-2
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Note: All students must participate in this course along with their specific artistic discipline.

Students in the Creativity sessions will be grouped into small interdisciplinary "families," so that Dance, Literary Arts, Music, Theatre Arts, and Visual Arts are represented. Each group will be required to create a small production utilizing their individual and group creativity skills. Sample models will be provided, but students will be required to develop their own product from initial blueprint to the final production.

Dance - #UCSCA-3
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014


Dance students will gain further technique and training in the areas of ballet, modern, and jazz. The program will also emphasize improvisational techniques, dance composition/ choreography skills, and the study of prominent figures in dance history. Those enrolled will also have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned in a culminating performance.

Theatre Arts - #UCSCA-4
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Students will study the various components of Theatre Arts, with an emphasis on acting, theatre history, and multicultural theatre. The program will revolve around character analysis, improvisational skills, audition skills, and ensemble work. Students will also have an opportunity to develop skills in technical theatre. All students will have a chance to perform in a final production.

Literary Arts - #UCSCA-5
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

With college-level writing workshops as a model, students will focus on the development of literary arts pieces from inception to reception as they explore the writing, reading, and critiquing of poetry and short fiction. The program will employ an organic approach to form and prosody, so that students will feel comfortable using methods and terms both in their own works and in their discussions of works by others.

Instrumental Music - #UCSCA-6
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Students will explore individual, small group, and full ensemble literature through a comprehensive approach to musicianship. Analysis, research, composition, and performance will provide the basis for a total understanding of the selected repertoire. The experiences will go much beyond their regular performance experiences and strive to develop independent musicality. Each performance medium and student compositions will be featured in the final presentation.

Two- & Three-Dimensional Visual Arts - #UCSCA-7
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Students will be involved in the study of a variety of two- & three-dimensional art forms. Through the elements and principles of design, students will explore various styles and media as they translate shape into form. All students will have the opportunity to develop their own personal style and technical skill.

Digital Arts - #UCSCA-8
Entering Grades: 7-12
Dates: July 6-13, 2014

Students will explore methods of electronic design using digital imaging, audio, animation, and video. Development of hand-coded Web applications will provide the basis for presentation of individual student portfolios. A comprehensive understanding of technical concepts will be achieved using state-of-the-art software including Macromedia Dreamweaver, Flash, and Adobe Photoshop. Students will collaborate on a multimedia production that will be published on the UCSCA website.
