Instructions for Auditions and Interviews

To be considered for participation in the Upper Chesapeake Summer Center for the Arts, students must complete an audition and/or portfolio interview. Auditions/interviews are scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Elkton Middle School from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 noon and then from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. THIS WILL BE THE ONLY AUDITION/ INTERVIEW DATE.

Elkton Middle School is located in Cecil County off Interstate 95N.

From Interstate 95N, take exit 109A (Rt. 279S). Once off the exit proceed on Rt. 279S through two traffic lights. The second light will be the intersection of North Street. Turn left onto North Street. The school entrance will be immediately on the right.

From Rt. 40E, take Rt. 213N in Elkton. Proceed through five lights to the intersection of Rt. 279. Turn right and proceed to the next traffic light (North Street). Turn right onto North Street. The school entrance will be immediately on the right.

From Rt. 213N, proceed through Elkton to the Rt. 279 intersection. Turn right and proceed to the next traffic light (North Street). Turn right onto North Street. The school entrance will be immediately on the right.

Chorus students should perform a three-minute song. Recorded accompaniment may be used. A piano, cassette, and CD player will be available. Sight-singing and rhythmic exercises will be included within the audition procedures that mirror Maryland Music Educators All State requirements.

Dance students will be required to participate in a class in which they will be asked to exhibit skills in ballet, modern, and jazz dance technique. (Those auditioning should arrive early to warm themselves up.) Please be sure to bring appropriate footwear (ballet slippers, pointe shoes, jazz shoes, etc.) if you have them.

Literary Arts students should bring 3-5 poems or 3-5 pages of fiction written by them in the past two years. If excerpted from longer works, a brief synopsis is required. Students will also be required to participate in an impromptu writing exercise and to discuss their writing experiences to date.

Instrumental Music students must bring their own music and instruments. Applicants must prepare a three-minute solo using piano or taped accompaniment. Sight-reading and rhythmic exercises will be included within the audition procedures that mirror Maryland Music Educators All State requirements.

Theatre Arts students will be required to perform two memorized monologues. One monologue should be classic (pre-1900's) and one should be modern (post 1900's). The combined time should be no more than four minutes. Students should be prepared to participate in improvisational activities and be able to discuss theatre experiences to date.

Two- and Three-Dimensional Art students will be required to submit portfolios consisting of six to eight pieces which best represent the artist's abilities. Slides/photographs may be used for pieces that are too cumbersome to transport. The essay submitted with the application is also considered a part of the portfolio. Candidates may, therefore, be questioned on what they wrote as well as what they present. Originality, flexibility, motivation, good presentation skills, and overall creativity are expected candidate characteristics.

Digital Arts students will be required to present an overview of their proficiency in one other art discipline (i.e. art, dance, literary arts, music, or theatre) using electronic media (Power Point, Digital poster/collage, Video, DVD, or CD). Students should be prepared to discuss future goals for digital arts in relation to their other talents.
