Discover and identify line as an element of art. Define line in oral language and show visual examples on the board or through works of art.

Have students look around the room or outside and identify lines they see.

Students will use simple media such as crayons or markers to draw as many kinds of lines as they can.

Students will draw lines in the air to music and use whole body movements to create lines.

Take a trip outdoors and choose a large safe area such as a playground to produce lines with sidewalk chalk. Draw the lines they see in nature. (E)

The student will draw a self-portrait using a variety of lines. Discuss line, expression, and feelings. The teacher will show a variety of portraits and self-portraits throughout history and cultures.
