PBL and Multimedia Projects

Introduction

Multimedia Projects and Project Based Learning can be a unique way to engage students in their own learning. They make learning relevant to students by providing connections to the outside world and other subject areas. Students taking part in this type of learning are preparing for the real world and the future by gaining the ability to work with one another and problem solve.

Through knowledge construction and the application of critical thinking skills, students can represent their learning in engaging projects and using tools, including technology, that go beyond traditional paper and pencil. The web and technology offer powerful tools for multimedia projects and project-based learning.

The Technologies

(1)   Multimedia Projects: Multimedia projects are a great way for students to represent and demonstrate what they have learned. Students can use a combination of sound, video, images, text, and various other technologies. Some common applications that encourage and promote multimedia projects are: Hyperstudio, KidPix, and PowerPoint. View the Introduction to Multimedia Project PowerPoint for more information about this technology.

(2)   Project Based Learning: PBL is a shift from traditional classroom instruction. It focuses on long-term learning activities that promote interdisciplinary instruction, student centered activities, and an integration of real-world connections.  PBL is motivating because students are engaged and stakeholders in their own learning.  View the Introduction to Project-Based Learning PowerPoint presentation for background on the topic.
