Using the Internet for Research (4 different web sites)

 

 

I.Basic Information on Famous (and not so famous) Explorers

The above link is an on-line electronic encyclopedia on explorers. It can be searched three different ways:

 

  1. Click on the alphabetic list on the top of the page to go to a section of the alphabet containing the explorerÕs name.

 

  1. Click on the region of the world, or date to search.

 

  1. Simply use the scroll arrow to scan down the long alphabetic listing name by name.

 

If you donÕt find the name on the first try, try using the last name first or first name of the person to search for them.  Sometimes the people who put these references together put the name in a different way than your teacher.

 

 

 

II.MarinerÕs Museum Timeline of ExplorerÕs Listings

Click on the above link to see a timeline with links explaining different facts about explorers, exploration and the different ages of exploration in world history.

 

Locate the explorer you are interested in and click on the name to find the biography.

 

The MarinerÕs Museum of Newport News, Virginia has a neat site that allows you to look up facts about different explorers and find out about what it was like to sail the seas during the age of sailing ships.

 

 

 

III.Explorer Hall of Fame

 

When you go to this site you will find a number of explorers that were chosen because the authors of the site felt that they are especially deserving of fame.

From here click on ExplorerÕs Hall of Fame.  It is a little more contemporary (has John Glenn, Sally Ride, Charles Lindbergh as well as historic explorers).

 

Step 1 Click on the link that explains how the explorers were chosen for the Hall of Fame.

 

After you have read why they are on this list go and find your explorer.

 

Step 2 Click on the picture of your explorer.  You will find detailed information about the person here.

 

Step 3Once youÕve read the biography of the explorer you can chose a link to find out more.
